The Big Apple is immortalised in this game of greats, capturing the essence of the early 1900's construction boom and the growth of skyscraper architecture across New York’s skyline.

Contemporary counterparts take place in this edition with some of the city's most recognisable silhouettes; The Guggenheim is the rook, the Flatiron Building is the knight, The Chrysler Building makes for an incredibly powerful bishop, whilst the undeniable grandeur of the Empire State Building makes for the perfect queen and the poignant, impeccable design of One World Trade Tower is the only choice for king in this set.

The show-stopping buildings are aptly striking for such a decadent game;  Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum's House plays the pawn, The Cayan Tower makes for an incredibly elegant rook, the Burj al Arab steps in as knight, the Rose Rotana is a beautiful bishop and the Princess Tower makes for a regal queen, with the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa’ s commanding stature being fitting for a king.

The traditional Staunton Chess set was designed by architect Nathaniel Cooke who took details from a number of different chess sets, however more interestingly took inspiration from classical architecture details which he saw in the city around him.

With this in mind, we thought it only fitting that we added a Staunton design into the Skyline collection, with our own contemporary aesthetic and materiality applied.

Pawns are terraced houses, Big Ben is the Rook, with the London Eye playing the Knight. 30 St Mary Axe is cast as the Bishop, and the Shard lends its elegance and might to the role of the Queen. No other building than Canary Wharf would be better suited to play the King, and this piece stands at four and a half inches tall.

Each numbered set comes complete with a hand screen-printed Corian® stone city map or Italian Carrara marble playing board and in a luxury presentation box.

The contrasting finish of the polished light side against the opposing dark, patinated chessmen creates a striking collection of pieces.

A bronze finish is used for the lighter pieces and a patination oil is used to create the darker pieces. The reassuring weight of each piece makes this an extremely tactile chess set and the leather bases lend a softness of touch and beautiful finish to each piece.
