Who is FILD ?

FILD - Federation of International Lighting Designers e.V. is a professional association of freelance and independent lighting planners, lighting designers and lighting architects. It was founded in 2014 by 12 lighting designers and university professors from Germany, Austria and Belgium. The association is based in Frankfurt am Main.

What distinguishes FILD from other professional associations?

The requirements in the lighting sector are becoming more and more extensive and differentiated. They require the know-how of specialists who comprehensively consider all aspects of design with light, daylight and artificial lighting in their projects and subtly implement them in their planning. Good solutions are based above all on sound knowledge of technical, physiological, aesthetic and psychological factors.

Light has a fundamental significance for people and the environment. Why is it then that lighting design does not have a place in our society?

In the curricula and training of architects and electrical planners-the professional groups responsible for lighting design up until now-these topics are considered far too little or not at all. Apart from a few exceptions, which often depend on the private initiative of professors or lecturers, there is no bindingly regulated training for the highly qualified profession of lighting design.

Why is FILD committed to the lighting design profession?

FILD takes a clear position here. Lighting design and planning must be established as an independent profession "LIGHT ARCHITECTURE". With this demand, FILD clearly sets itself apart from other professional associations. The primary goal of the association is to enforce a mandatory university education in Germany and the entire EU. FILD is made up of experienced specialists who act independently from industry or manufacturers; they convince through their competence and expertise in this specialist field. They give a voice to high-profile specialized planners and work to ensure that awareness of good light becomes a matter of course.

Why is Light Architecture our Future?

There are numerous studies now that investigate and prove the effect of light on people: The importance of light for us and our environment is a global and socially relevant issue that FILD wants to bring to the public's attention. A better informed society would have clearly opposed the phase-out of incandescent and halogen lamps at a time when adequate LED technology was not yet available. Due to the inferior quality of LEDs, the environment suffers from light pollution, accelerates insect mortality, leads to sleep disturbances and much more.

Why are standards not enough to create positive light spaces?

We encounter light spaces everywhere - we just have to actively perceive them. It's about the harmony of light and space, light and architecture, or light and landscape by day and by night.

The lighting designer assumes a great deal of responsibility in designing lighting spaces. DIN standards can only be planning aids. Above all, however, standards must define much more clearly what qualitatively good light is in order to avoid the use of inadequate LED technology in the long term. The industry has sufficient power and resources to ensure this.

Why become a member of FILD?

As a professional association, we are active and committed to our "light goals". At the same time, we offer our members a strong community in which we are there for each other and support each other.

FILD stands for international networks for the exchange of expertise and knowledge transfer. We seek and promote dialogue with other professional associations, specialist planners, colleges and universities, technical colleges and design schools. FILD organizes workshops, lectures and a competition explicitly for students in order to already raise awareness for the topic of LIGHT among the next generation of planners.
