Welcome Ceremony with Michael Glos / Federal Minister of Economics and Technology
Friday 8 February 2008, 9:00 a.m.
Via Mobile Junction Hall 10

Trend Forum
Galleria 1
"Trends are more than new products and ideas, they are the essence of a plurality of possibilities – a cocktail of the most eclectic stylistic trajectories.” From this premise the bora.herke style studio, (Berlin/Frankfurt) discerns four signpost trend themes from among the current key movements and influences: clean & pure, decorative & reduced, playful & intensive and natural & innovative. These are brought together with the common notions of clarity and modernity. Each theme finds expression in its own colour and style mix and is presented partly through exhibitors’ standard products but above all in their new ones. In this way the designer team has created a presentation which closely approaches reality and is, at the same time, a trend show, a buying aid and a source of inspiration for decoration ideas.

Japan Style: Living Japan by sozo_comm and Cool J
Hall 5.1 B
Design and lifestyle from the Land of the Rising Sun. The national presentation in Hall 5.1 B has two sections: the curated exhibition, 'Living Japan by sozo_comm', shows designer products, including gift articles, stationery, home accessories and small pieces of furniture, from 38 manufacturers. The ambitious 'sozo_comm' project has been initiated by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to provide strategic support for Japanese suppliers of high-quality products. The concept is rounded off by Cool J at which around 35 Japanese Ambiente exhibitors present their latest products for the European and worldwide markets. Through these national presentations in Hall 5.1 B, trade visitors can obtain a valuable insight into the changes and opportunities of this important market. Additionally, the attached café has a Japanese theme and is the ideal place to discover the country from the culinary side, too.

Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany
Award ceremony: Forum, 8 February, 10:30 a. m.
Exhibition: Foyer of Halls 5.1/6.1
It is reckoned to be one of the most demanding competitions of its kind: the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is the official distinction in the field of design and is awarded by the Federal Republic of Germany. As the central thrust in the strategy of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology to foster design, it is run by the Rat für Formgebung/German Design Council as part of their formal responsibilities. The aspiration of this internationally acclaimed award is to reflect the best of German design. Equally representative is the level of the interdisciplinary exhibition, which is to be seen in the Foyer to Halls 5.1/6.1. The official award ceremony will take place on the first day of the trade fair as part of the formal opening.

Design Plus

Foyer to Halls 5.1/6.1
Countless good products come onto the market every year. Yet just some of them stand out because of their quite special design. It is therefore often not easy for the trade to filter the best products from the large range on offer. ‘Design Plus’ has taken on the task of distinguishing those products, which stand out because of that special something, i.e. that ‘Plus’ in design terms, and thus sends a signal encouraging greater boldness in matters of design. All Ambiente exhibitors are eligible to take part in the international competition for products that have been on the market for no longer than two years. The jury of eminent experts will judge the submissions according to stringent criteria: quality of design, practicality, technical and ecological quality as well as the overall concept. This means that the exhibition of the winning products offers the trade, as well as manufacturers, designers and the media, a valuable overview of the best current design products on the consumer-goods market.

4. International Kahla Design Competition: 20 Hotel Dreams

Hall 10.3 A 30
Hotel dreams in porcelain: in a competition organised by Kahla/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH, 20 of the best design students from four German and Finnish universities came up with new, trend-oriented solutions for hotels and restaurants. To this end, the young designers had the chance to study the most innovative hotels and restaurants in Berlin and the modern Kahla factory. All entries have been included in a touring exhibition, which can also be seen at Ambiente 2008. The three winners of the competition, Katja Koskela, Jenni Mäki and Michèle Lontzen, were awarded a month's practical training with financial support at the innovative Kahla factory.

Plagiarius

Award Ceremony: Congress Centre, Room: Illusion, 8 February, 11:30 a.m.
Exhibition: Foyer of Hall 4.1
Quick and dirty: in spite of the great success of campaigns such as Messe Frankfurt against Copying, the trade in plagiarised goods continues to be a burning issue for the consumer-goods industry. The ‘Aktion Plagiarius’ campaign has fought for more than 30 years against infringements of copyright of design and breach of patent and denounces year on year - and to some considerable effect - the most blatant pirates of ideas. Those receiving the ‘gnome with the golden nose’ award are thus not only proved guilty of plagiarism, but publicly denounced as well. The award ceremony for this negative trophy on the first day of the trade fair, together with the exhibition in the Foyer of Hall 4.1, promise once again this year to give criminal companies one or two (unpleasant) surprises and provide one or two ‘aha’ experiences for quality-conscious trade visitors.

Product of the year
Competition for plastic products
Exhibition: Galleria 0
The unstoppable victory march of plastics began in the 17th century with the arrival of Gum Arabic in Europe. A high point for this extremely flexible material was seen in the 1960s with the futuristic designs for furniture by the celebrity Italian designer Joe Colombo, who was fascinated by the then newly developed plastic. In the product world of today, plastic is taken for granted and is omnipresent. One more reason for the professional association for plastic consumer goods (Fachverband Kunststoff Konsumwaren e.V) to try to focus people’s attention once again and to create its own competition. The independent jury is made up of representatives from trade journals, consumer associations, universities, raw-materials manufacturers, the wholesale and retail trade, the advertising industry and the ‘Stiftung Warentest’ foundation, as well as from design organisations. They will assess the current products according to the criteria of functionality, design and creativity. The award is divided into four different functional areas: "Home”, "Leisure”, "General Use” and "Technical Consumer Goods”. The best products in each category will receive an award at Ambiente and be displayed in an exhibition in Galleria 0.
