Kakunodate is known for traditional Samurai residences and rows of cherry trees、which is why it is called the "Little Kyoto". This is where the wild cherry-bark wood, or Kaba-zaiku, has been passed down for over 230 years. Kaba specifically refers to the bark of Yamazakaura tree, which makes this craft completely unique.

The craft provides a variety of everyday products with rich, deep color, glossiness, smoothness, strength and its dry/moisture proof character. Tomioka Shoten started off a new brand, "art KABA", to create completely new products that are modern, and yet maintain the traditional feel.
